What does it mean that my pre-authorized credit card or line of credit payment is on hold?

Similar to the hold period that may apply when you deposit a cheque, if your pre-authorized payment is being made from a bank account you have at another financial institution (other than Scotiabank), the payment amount may be held for up to 5 business days after the scheduled payment due date.

During the hold period, the payment amount will be applied to your credit account, but the amount of that payment will not be available for use for any transactions until the hold period is over. Once the hold period is over and the payment has been cleared and posted to your other bank account, then the amount of your payment will be reflected in the available credit.
